I just read the 4140 pre hard thread and now I have a couple questions. Is the pre Hard the same thing as 4140 HT ? I've always thought it was but maybe I'm wrong ? What you are talking about is 4140-HT. 4140-HT is pre-treated at the mill to the Rc-28 to Rc-32 range. 4130 (same chrome-moly alloy, but with less carbon than 4140) is also available in the HT condition. I have machined a lot of 4140-HT with HSS cutters. Lathe toolbits, end mills, drills and tapsbuy 4140 ht hardness.. You won't have any trouble using HSS.
